Our commitment to having a positive impact on the world is at the forefront of everything we do here at Prima. We are dedicated to continually finding new ways to help minimize our footprint and create long-term sustainable social and environmental change. As well as the below initiatives, we have several ongoing internal projects that are focused on further reducing our energy and water consumption and we plan to bring these to life in the near future.
Sustainable Energy
The Prima facilities are powered by a 200KW on-site solar energy farm with over 700 panels. This has generated over 269,000KW in energy to date, which is able to cover 80% of our energy requirements, minimizing the amount of electricity that we consume. Additionally, our storm water recovery is at 80%. After being collected in our water storage tanks it is utilized to supply our air conditioning and toilets, and we are currently investigating how to expand its use across other areas of our business.
Recycling
We ship all of our products in packaging that is fully recyclable, not only in terms of materials used but also without branding so that packaging can be upcycled. Since January 2019 Prima has diverted over 435 tonnes of paper from landfill. That is the equivalent of 7,395 trees! By utilising recycled paper across our business we are not only saving trees, but water too – it takes 324 litres of water to make 1 kilogram of paper, so we have saved 140 million litres of water from being wasted to remake new paper/cardboard.
In partnership with Ricoh and Epson our ink cartridges are retained and recycled with over 5,000 cartridges (equivalent to 1.7 tonnes) being processed and repurposed into recycled materials every year. We also recycle over 1.8 tonnes of clear plastic annually. We are continuously looking for ways in which we can minimize paper wastage through efficient set up of product specifications, batching rules and waste management.
